Webster Tarpley on Russian opposition, WikiLeaks & Revolutions

Every year, USA is spending 100 mln $ only on Russian media lobby. This is in official US budget. USA is interfering in internal affairs of other country - american crime against democracy. This certainly appears to confirm what Dave Emory was saying this week, in his breadth and depth analysis of 'wik-i-fas-cism' as his called them. What we may rely on is their oblivious grasp of how transparent their activities are, to all of us on the Internet. That will play right into Putin's hand.

The Wikileaks Code

92,000 internal records, related to the war in Afghanistan from 2004 to present were leaked yesterday from the whistle blowing website Wikileaks.org. The documents include plans and accounts of Coalition operations, descriptions of enemy attacks and records of meetings with local Afghan politicians, among other things.RT America has been covering the WikiLeaks story for some time now but just recently the mainstream media has started to cover it. 92,000 internal records, related to the war in Afghanistan from 2004 to present were leaked yesterday from the whistle blowing website Wikileaks.org. The founder of WikiLeaks, Julian Assange, has been all over the news for his controversial publication of the documents he has released. As Wikileaks continues to make a name for itself by leaking nearly 93,000 documents about US policy in Afghanistan, the Obama administration says the documents do not reveal very much and, additionally, do not reflect changes in policy since Obama became president.WikiLeaks, blows the whistle but The Whitehouse downplays the release of these documents.

Why the revolution was not televised in the West

Social media sites like Facebook and Twitter got the story of the Tunisian uprising out, with pictures of the protests spreading like wildfire across the Arab world and binding audiences to the ever changing story. Western news outlets on the other hand, at least initially, failed to give the story the coverage it deserved. On this episode of Listening Post, we look at the role media - new and old - played in the Tunisian revolution.

Albanian PM Berisha defiant after three die in clashes

Prime Minister Sali Berisha of Albania has said there will be no Tunisia-style uprising in his country after three people died in clashes on Friday. "No one can seize power by violent means in this country," he said.
Thousands of protesters demanding his government's resignation were confronted by riot police in the capital Tirana. An opposition leader said the crowd had been provoked and police had behaved unprofessionally.
Albania - one of Europe's poorest countries - s not due to hold its next general election until 2013. But political tensions grew last week after Ilir Meta, a key ally of the prime minister, resigned after being accused of corruption over a power plant tender. The opposition wants a fresh general election after rejecting the result of the June 2009 vote, which Mr Berisha's Democratic Party won by a small margin. The ex-communist state's hopes of joining the EU have been thwarted as it struggles to prove it has made the transition to a fully functioning democracy. Brussels rejected Albania's application for candidate status late last year, urging it to meet an agenda of 12 points, in particular fighting corruption.

BRIC Becomes BRICS: Changes on the Geopolitical Chessboard

The world’s four main emerging economic powers, known by the acronym BRIC — standing for Brazil, Russia, India and China — now refer to themselves as BRICS. The capital “S” in BRICS stands for South Africa, which formally joined the four on Dec. 24, bringing Africa into this important organization of rising global powers from Asia, Latin America and Europe. President Jacob Zuma is expected to attend the BRICS April meeting in Beijing as a full member. This is a development of geopolitical significance, and it has doubtless intensified frustrations in Washington. The U.S. has been concerned about the growing economic and political strength of the BRIC countries for several years. In 2008, for instance, the National Intelligence Council produced a document titled “Global Trends 2025″ that predicted:

Al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM): “Call to our Enraged People in Algeria”

On January 13, 2011, Al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb leader Abu Musab Abdel Wadoud issued a statement urging Algerians to rise against their government and demand a change in their socio-economic status: “Prove to them…that the policy of ‘Starve your dog it’ll follow you’ won’t work with the lions that refuse humiliation and see the infidelity of degradation.” Abdel Wadoud asserted that the Algerian government will soon face revenge for “Allah’s religion that which you have alienated. We will avenge every widow whose husband you killed; every poor family that feeds from the waste tanks...every orphan you displaced; every Muslim family whose rights you swallowed and forced to live as animals; every father whose righteous living right you stole; every young man you pushed to meet his fate in the seas; every oil drop whose revenue you splurged in the European clubs.” Further, Abdel Wadoud stated that AQIM fighters “were taken aback due to the malpractices of the sons of France, from absenting the Sharia of Islam away from the policy of the nation...[we] promise you to take revenge and stand with our rifles in one rank with you.”

India and Nuclear Non-Proliferation

“I did not move a muscle when I first heard that the atom bomb had wiped out Hiroshima. On the contrary, I said to myself, unless the world now adopts non-violence, it will spell certain suicide for mankind”. – Mahatma Gandhi in response to the Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic bombings of 1945- Harijan- September 29, 1946. From the time of its independence in August 1947, India has been spearheading the movement for nuclear disarmament across the world. The origins of this cause adopted by India can be traced to the strong stand against nuclear weapons taken by the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi. In 1949, India’s permanent representative to the United Nations, Sir Benegal Rau, chaired the subcommittee which was entrusted with designing a proposal to restrict the spread of nuclear weapons. At the same time, however, India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru realised the need to develop India’s nuclear infrastructure. India’s nuclear programme started in 1954 at the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre(BARC) in Trombay which was originally set up as the Atomic Energy Establishment, Trombay (AEET).

A Stealth Aircraft With Peaceful Chinese Characteristics

Annexed below is an interesting article on the Chinese Stealth aircraft J-20 tested by the Chinese on January 11 before the meeting of Robert Gates, the visiting US Defence Secretary, with President Hu Jintao at Beijing. This article has been written by Rear Admiral Yang Yi, of the People’s Liberation Army (Navy) who is a research fellow at the Institute for Strategic Studies, National Defense University of China. This article written by him on January 13 was carried by the party-controlled “People’s Daily” online on January 21.

The future of Serbia is in defining its interests

Stefan Dragojevic’s article, ‘The future of Serbia is in the defense of its interests‘, argues that Serbia should focus on the preservation of its national interests, in particular in Kosovo, Bosnia and Croatia. But can a focus on “national” interests really be the answer at a time, when no nation-state in the world is able to cope with the economic, political and environmental challenges of tomorrow? Further, does the Serbian elite even know what its “national” interest is? When looking at Serbia in 2011, one has to but recognise that the major problem for Serbia will be to overcome this focus on “nationalism.”

Britain Spearheads “Mini-NATO” In Arctic Ocean, Baltic Sea

On January 19 and 20 British Prime Minister David Cameron hosted his counterparts from Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania at the first Nordic Baltic Summit to consolidate an “alliance of common interests.” Cameron’s initiative followed by two months a two-day meeting of Nordic-Baltic defense ministers in Norway with the defense chiefs of the same nine nations that participated in the London gathering along with defense representatives from Germany and Poland. A Russian commentary on the day of the opening of the Nordic Baltic Summit in the United Kingdom stated:
“Europeans have decided to watch the Russians in the Arctic and how they behave there closely. The idea of creating an Arctic ‘mini-NATO’ was discussed at the [Nordic Baltic] Summit in London on Wednesday. According to analysts, the heightened activity of North Europe is explained by an increased interest in the Arctic and its natural resources.”

The Food Bubble

You have seen food prices going up at the local grocery store. That could be just the beginning. According to Lester Brown, a leading expert in both the environment and world agriculture, those bulging supermarket shelves are part of a "food bubble", which could crash.

Population: one planet, too many people?

A groundbreaking Population report (Wed 12 January) by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) has revealed the world is hurtling towards population overload placing billions at risk of hunger, thirst and slum conditions. Population: One planet, too many people? is the first report of its kind by the engineering profession. Unless the engineering solutions highlighted in the report are urgently implemented then the projected 2.5 billion more people on earth by the end of this Century (currently there is 6.9 billion) will crush the earth’s resources. If Britain starts fuel rationing, could US be next?

This week, a group of the British parliament released a plan to start rationing fuel within the next ten years. Could the US follow suit? The plan calls for the government to issue an equal number of Tradable Energy Quotas to all British adults for free and to auction credits off to businesses and government agencies. The goal of TEQs would be to encourage conservation and to deal with any future energy shortages in a way that's more fair than letting high prices determine who buys energy and who doesn't. In the face of runaway climate change and imminent peak oil, Britain is thinking ahead.

Rheinmetall Wins Major Dutch Army Ammo Order

The Rheinmetall Group of Düsseldorf, Germany, has concluded a framework agreement with the Royal Dutch Armed Forces to supply the Netherlands with a wide array of different ammunition types. The anticipated order volume over a 10-year period is EUR 200 million. Under the agreement, the Royal Dutch Armed Forces have already placed an initial order in 2010 for modular propelling charges for the PzH 2000 self-propelled howitzer.

Latin America: The Empire Strikes Back

For the past decade, American policy vis-à-vis Latin America has been relatively low-key, partly because of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and partly because the region has seen an unprecedented growth in economic power and political independence. But, with Republicans taking over the House of Representatives, that is about to change, and, while the Southern Cone no longer stands to attention when Washington snaps its fingers, an aggressive and right wing Congress is capable of causing considerable mischief. Rep. Lleana Ros-Lehtinen (R-Fl), a long-time hawk on Cuba and leftist regimes in Venezuela and Bolivia, is the new chair of the powerful House Committee on Foreign Affairs, and the rightist Rep. Connie Mack (D-Fl) heads up the House subcommittee on Western Hemisphere affairs. Ros-Lethinen is already preparing hearings aimed at Venezuela and Bolivia, and Mack will try to put the former on the State Department's list of countries sponsoring terrorism.

Did Blackwater Founder Fund Somalia’s Pirate Fighters?

Just because Erik Prince recently sold off Blackwater, the infamous security company he founded, doesn’t mean he’s out of the private-security game. He may have put up seed money for a different firm to form militias in Somalia to battle pirates and Islamists. The New York Times cites a confidential African Union report claiming Prince is “at the top of the management chain” of Saracen International, a South African security company that’s trying to work with both the embattled Somali government and the breakaway region of Puntland. In Puntland, Saracen is putting together a 1050-strong anti-pirate militia, something the international community has greeted with caution. And in Mogadishu, it wants to do what western militaries don’t: protect government officials, train the rump Somali army to fight the Qaeda-aligned al-Shebaab insurgency — and maybe do a little Shebaab-fighting of their own.

New Navy Jammer Could Invade Networks, Nuke Sites

When China’s stealth-fighter prototype took to the air two weeks ago, it intensified what was already a heated debate in Washington over which, and how many, new fighter planes to buy. Lost in all this noise was the U.S. Navy’s real plan for winning any future air war with China or another big baddie. Rather than going toe-to-toe with J-20s and other enemy jets, the Navy is planning to attack its rivals where they’re most vulnerable: in the electromagnetic spectrum. The frontline weapon for this electronic war is a new airborne jamming system currently in development. The Next Generation Jammer should allow the Navy to blind the enemy’s radars, disrupt its communications and slip malicious code into computer networks. The new jammer, and its initial host airplane, the EA-18G Growler (pictured), have quickly become top Pentagon priorities. U.S. regional commanders opted in 2009 to buy more Growlers rather than continue production of the F-22 stealth dogfighter. Secretary of Defense Robert Gates announced this month that he would accelerate the NGJ’s current five-year-or-so development plan, using cash saved from shutting down redundant command staffs.

A Path Is Sought for States to Escape Their Debt Burdens

Policy makers are working behind the scenes to come up with a way to let states declare bankruptcy and get out from under crushing debts, including the pensions they have promised to retired public workers.
Unlike cities, the states are barred from seeking protection in federal bankruptcy court. Any effort to change that status would have to clear high constitutional hurdles because the states are considered sovereign.
But proponents say some states are so burdened that the only feasible way out may be bankruptcy, giving Illinois, for example, the opportunity to do what General Motors did with the federal government’s aid.
Beyond their short-term budget gaps, some states have deep structural problems, like insolvent pension funds, that are diverting money from essential public services like education and health care. Some members of Congress fear that it is just a matter of time before a state seeks a bailout, say bankruptcy lawyers who have been consulted by Congressional aides.

Azerbaijan will decide the shape of the Southern Gas Corridor

In the coming months, Baku is expected to make a decision defining the scheme for the long-term export of Azeri gas. This decision will be of fundamental importance for the EU's policy of energy security based on the Southern Gas Corridor concept. This consists of four mutually alternative plans for gas transport, including the Nabucco pipeline. The visits to Baku (and Ashgabat) on 13-15 January by the European Commission’s President Jose Manuel Barroso and the Energy Commissioner Günther Oettinger were the most important – and probably last before the final decision – attempt to specify the shape of the Southern Corridor together with Azerbaijan, which is the only reliable gas supplier for this route. Although the launch of the corridor on the basis of Azeri gas is presently a near-certainty, it has not yet been established via which route nor under what conditions the gas will be transmitted into Europe. In practice, Azerbaijan will decide the shape and route of the corridor, on the basis of their own calculations and what they estimate will be the most convenient variant for themselves. This could call into question the EU’s flagship project – Nabucco.

Bulgaria Corruption Tapes 'Manipulated'

The Prosecutor’s Office announced the findings of the National Institute of Forensic Science in the Interior Ministry. Experts from the Institute concluded that the tapes are not originals and have been recorded from one device to another, which allows for potential manipulation. The tapes contain alleged conversations between senior government figures in Bulgaria, and suggest that the officials granted political favours to businesses in the country. The scandal that erupted following the release of the tapes has prompted the government to call a confidence vote in parliament, which it is expected to win. Forensic experts concluded that the tapes were created by re-recording original stereo signals using additional electronic devices, most likely a computer.

12 Economic Collapse Scenarios That We Could Potentially See In 2011

What could cause an economic collapse in 2011? Well, unfortunately there are quite a few “nightmare scenarios” that could plunge the entire globe into another massive financial crisis.  The United States, Japan and most of the nations in Europe are absolutely drowning in debt.  The Federal Reserve continues to play reckless games with the U.S. dollar.  The price of oil is skyrocketing and the global price of food just hit a new record high.  Food riots are already breaking out all over the world.  Meanwhile, the rampant fraud and corruption going on in world financial markets is starting to be exposed and the whole house of cards could come crashing down at any time.  Most Americans have no idea that a horrific economic collapse could happen at literally any time.  There is no way that all of this debt and all of this financial corruption is sustainable.  At some point we are going to reach a moment of “total system failure”.

A “New Phase of Globalization” is Taking Shape in Beijing, Flag Planted on American Soil

The Red Dragon is roaring.  The headline news over the weekend was that Chinese President Hu Jintao called the currency system a “product of the past.” Hu believes that Chinese currency will likely become the world’s currency within the not-to-distant future.  On the heels of that announcement, a Financial Times article highlights the role that China already has within a new system of globalization; one that supplants the U.S. as a key trading partner at the hub of the global trade wheel.
Here is a perfect summary of the current situation:

Age of Extremes

End of Euro? ... Ireland Prints Own Notes

Was this the week the euro gave up the ghost and the EU threw in the proverbial towel? Analyzing the Anglosphere's dominant social themes is not an easy avocation and one looks for documentable breakthroughs. We have been fortunate to find several during the timeframe of this young publication but are always looking for more. Irish printing of euros seems to fit our criterion of a demonstrably significant event. (Information that makes you sit up straight and go "Wha?") The one that stands out the most for us previously (as we have mentioned before) was the Congressional appearance of Federal Reserve Inspector General Elizabeth Coleman. It was perhaps the single worst appearance of any official in the history of such appearances and left no doubt that the Fed had not a clue about how to handle the fallout from its various monetary insanities.

FARC may inherit hundreds of men from slain drug lord

Colombia's largest rebel group FARC may benefit from the recent killing of neo-paramilitary drug lord "Cuchillo," newspaper El Espectador reported on Monday. According to the newspaper, the death of Pedro Oliveiro Guerrero, alias Cuchillo, late last month made an end to the paramilitary rule of the underworld of Colombia's eastern plains that started when the AUC took control of the region in the 1990s.

Europe faces a new crisis

The European Union is facing a new phase of the economic crisis. This depressing forecast was made by a report on the World Economic Situation and Prospects-2011 presented by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development. Our commentary is by Yevgeny Kryshkin. Despite the fact that the EU has taken tough austerity measures and is planning to cut the budget deficit, it is risking another economic recession. This opinion was expressed by the authors of the report. They emphasize that a repeated recession in the EU countries and stagnation in the U.S. and Japan may trigger another wave of a global economic crisis.

10 Ways In Which China Humiliates The United States

Rolling out the red carpet, lining Constitution Avenue with Communist flags, and treating unelected Chinese dictator Hu Jintao to lavish White House dinners while he badmouths the U.S. dollar is hard enough to stomach, but there are a plethora of ways in which China is humiliating the United States as the globalists get ready to use China as the vehicle through which to complete the deindustrialization of the decaying American banana republic.

Meet The New Boss: China Owns The United States

Not satisfied with a hemorrhaging trade deficit with China that continues to bleed American jobs at a rate of millions, a crumbling manufacturing base being replaced by the endless import of cheap slave goods from the Communist state, and a stunted economy being rapidly outpaced by the Red Dragon, the Obama administration wanted to further drill it in to Americans who the new boss is yesterday, by placing Chinese flags throughout Washington DC before Obama’s fawning meeting with unelected President Hu Jintao.
Everyone is painfully aware of the fact that China now owns the United States economically, with the Chinese central bank being the largest debt holder at approaching $1 trillion dollars. The average American family with two children collectively owes around $12,000 dollars to China. The Communist state’s ownership of long term U.S. Treasury Securities means the United States pays upwards of $100 million dollars a day to China in terms of interest alone.

NASA’s Hansen: Impose Chinese Totalitarianism on America

Totalitarian thugs love China. They love its authoritarian government and absolute political power. One such thug is the climatologist James Hansen of NASA. Hansen thinks America needs to adapt Chinese authoritarianism in order to force climate change down the throats of the American people. “I have the impression that Chinese leadership takes a long view, perhaps because of the long history of their culture, in contrast to the West with its short election cycles,” writes Hansen. “At the same time, China has the capacity to implement policy decisions rapidly. The leaders seem to seek the best technical information and do not brand as a hoax that which is inconvenient.”

German Regime: Will 'good money bad money' juggle save Euro?

Franck Bulinge : Pas vraiment.

Tunisian Wikileaks Putsch: CIA Touts Mediterranean Tsunami of Coups

The US intelligence community is now in a manic fit of gloating over this weekend’s successful overthrow of the Tunisian government of President Ben Ali. The State Department and the CIA, through media organs loyal to them, are mercilessly hyping the Tunisian putsch of the last few days as the prototype of a new second generation of color revolutions, postmodern coups, and US-inspired people power destabilizations. At Foggy Bottom and Langley, feverish plans are being made for a veritable Mediterranean tsunami designed to topple most existing governments in the Arab world, and well beyond. The imperialist planners now imagine that they can expect to overthrow or weaken the governments of Libya, Egypt, Syria, Jordan, Algeria, Yemen, and perhaps others, while the CIA’s ongoing efforts to remove Italian Prime Minister Berlusconi (because of his friendship with Putin and support for the Southstream pipeline) make this not just an Arab, but rather a pan-Mediterranean, orgy of destabilization.

Moscow Moves to Close Ukrainian Institutions in Russia

Apparently confident that now it can do so without objections from the Yanukovich government in Kyiv, Moscow has disbanded the Federation of National Cultural Autonomy of Ukrainians of Russia and is setting the stage for closing the Ukrainian library in the Russian capital by continuing its seizures of “extremist” literature there. The Russian government, like its Soviet predecessor, has never been supportive of the more than five million ethnic Ukrainians living there, refusing to open any Ukrainian-language state schools even as it has complained about closure of some of the many Russian-language schools operating in Ukraine.

Putin’s Repressive Policies Leading Russia toward ‘Big Blood,’ Opposition Leaders Say

Vladimir Putin has “chosen the Belarusian path of dictatorship and repression,” opposition figures, who were released this weekend after being detained in a sanctioned protest action on December 3, told the media yesterday, and the Russian leader has opened the way to future clashes and violence of the kind many call “big blood.” Three leading opposition figures, Eduard Limonov, the head of the banned National Bolshevik Party, Boris Nemtsov, a leader of Solidarity, and Ilya Yashin, a leader of Solidarity’s youth wing, whom Amnesty International had identified as “prisoners of conscience” spoke at a Moscow press conference.

Venezuela’s Chavez Outlines Government’s Achievements in Annual Speech

In the National Assembly and around the country on Saturday people in their homes and in plazas listened to president Hugo Chavez’s 7 hour annual speech summarising the government’s management, achievements, and obstacles in 2010 and making projections for this year. The Venezuelan constitution states in article 237 that the president of the country, within ten days of the installment of the National Assembly, must personally address the assembly about the achievement of national objectives and account for the government’s administration for the past year.

Germany to re-arrest Mossad agent

Germany has reportedly issued a new arrest warrant for an Israeli suspected of involvement in the assassination of a Hamas official in Dubai. The prominent German weekly, Der Spiegel, reported in its Sunday edition that German authorities issued a new arrest warrant for an Israeli national identified as Uri Brodsky.
The report did not specify the new charges against Brodsky, an alleged Israeli Mossad agent suspected of involvement in the terror of Palestinian leader Mahmoud al-Mabhouh in a Dubai hotel room on January 19, 2010.

ISI chief attends Asif Ali Zardari's meeting with CIA head in US

The powerful Inter-Services Intelligence chief attended a meeting that President Asif Ali Zardari held with CIA chief Leon Panetta last week, dispelling a perception that the Pakistan government did not want to involve the military in its dealings with the US. ISI head Lt Gen Ahmed Shuja Pasha sat in on the key meeting held in Washington on Friday, the Dawn newspaper quoted diplomatic sources as saying. Pasha was not in Zardari's entourage that arrived in the US on Thursday. Pasha travelled alone to the US, participated in the president's meeting with Panetta but "stayed away from other activities", the report said.

With Stuxnet, Did The U.S. And Israel Create a New Cyberwar Era?

Remember the years-long controversy about whether the U.S. or the Israel would bomb Iran’s nuclear program? It appears they just did — virtually. And if they did, they also may have expanded our sense of how nations wage war in cyberspace. For all the hype, “cyberwar” has been a bush-league affair so far. Websites get defaced or taken offline, or an adversary’s software gets logic-bombed into a malfunctioning mess. Analysts warn that future assaults could fry an electrical grid (if it’s networked too well) or cause a military to lose contact with a piece of its remotely-controlled hardware. But that’s about the extent of the damage. Only the Stuxnet worm may point to a huge innovation for cyberwar: the mass disablement of an enemy’s most important strategic programs.

Former NSA Chief Called CIA 'Out of Control'

The CIA is "out of control" and often refuses to cooperate with other parts of the national security community, even undermining their efforts, said former National Security Agency head William Odom, according to a recently released record of a 9/11 Commission interview. "The CIA currently doesn't work for anyone. It thinks it works for the president, but it doesn't and it's out of control," says a report summarizing remarks made by Odom, a retired three-star general who served as director of the NSA from 1985 to 1988. Odom, who also served on the National Security Council staff during the Carter administration, was known as an outspoken advocate for intelligence reform. He died in 2008. The 2003 interview, among others conducted by the 9/11 Commission, was posted on the website Cryptome, which is often compared to the secret-spilling WikiLeaks website. The report was not a leak, however, but one of many records relating to the 9/11 Commission that have been released and made available on the National Archives website.

Washington To Rearm Georgia For New Conflicts

Recent reports in the Russian news media have detailed plans by the U.S. to provide the Mikheil Saakashvili government in Georgia with tens of millions of dollars worth of anti-aircraft and anti-tank weapons. The Russian government’s Itar-Tass news agency and Voice of Russia have confirmed the arms package with officials from the Russian special services and the Joint Staff of the armed forces. An official from the second source responded to the proposed arms sale by stating: “We deeply regret that the reset of US-Russian relations declared by the administration of Barack Obama does not change anything in Washington’s military support for the Georgian leadership, which began the war in the Caucasus in August 2008 and which is continuing to mastermind aggressive plans against the independent states of Abkhazia and South Ossetia.” [1] The Georgian-South Ossetian-Russian war of 2008 was preceded by Georgian artillery barrages against the South Ossetian capital of Tskhinvali on August 1 which killed six people including a Russian peacekeeper stationed there.

A dramatic shift in the peak oil discussion: “You don’t have to take my word for it”

If you write about, speak about, or talk with your family, friends and co-workers about peak oil, you’ve almost certainly been asked: “Well, who else is saying what you’re saying?” It’s wise not to rely on just one source of information. Humans are fallible creatures. Knowing that, we feel much more comfortable when we can confirm something someone tells us either directly through observation or indirectly by going to a well-vetted source. We can, for instance, easily verify whether the Empire State Building has 103 stories, either by going there and counting the stories or referring to some reputable source of information. Furthermore, whether the Empire State Building has 103 stories is not really a matter of opinion. It’s either true or it isn’t.
When it comes to murkier matters such as peak oil, we must admit that our perceptions and conclusions are always based on incomplete information. In such instances, humans, being social creatures, seek confirmation from others when they receive information that is new and not easily verified. They wonder, quite rightly, whether other people accept such information as correct.

Food Riots 2011

The stunningly violent food riots in Tunisia and Algeria show just how quickly things can change.  Just a few months ago, these two northern Africa nations were considered to be very stable, very peaceful and without any major problems.  But now protesters are openly squaring off with police in the streets.  Many of the protesters are throwing “fire bombs” or are shooting fireworks at the authorities, and the police are responding with a tremendous amount of violence themselves.  In Algeria, several protesters have been killed by police and several others have actually set themselves on fire to protest the economic conditions.  In Tunisia, more than 100 people have been killed and the president of that country actually had to flee for his life.  But on a global scale, food shortages have not even gotten that bad yet.

Doom And Gloom

Have you noticed that most Americans seem to know far more about American Idol, Dancing with the Stars, Justin Bieber and their favorite sports teams than they do about world affairs?  Most Americans cannot even find Tunisia and Algeria on a map, and if you told them that food riots are happening in those nations right now most of them would not even care anyway.  We have become a very self-centered, self-involved and self-absorbed nation.  Quite a few people have accused this column of being obsessed with “doom and gloom”, but the truth is that the world really is falling apart out there.  What are we supposed to do?  Are we all supposed to stick our heads in the sand and pretend that everything is going to be okay?  Should we all not try to warn others so that they can prepare for what is coming?  Until people understand that we are facing absolutely massive problems they are not going to be motivated to take significant action, and hopefully those of us that are proclaiming “doom and gloom” are doing a good enough job of describing what is really going on out there that some people are starting to wake up and actually make changes.

Qaradawi Comments On Tunisian Crisis

Qatari media is reporting the comments of Global Muslim Brotherhood leader Youssef Qaradawi on the Tunisian crisis. According to a translated Al-Jazeera interview:
Doha Al-Jazeera Satellite Channel Television in Arabic at 2054 gmt on 15 January carries a five-minute telephone interview with Shaykh Yusuf al-Qaradawi, president of the International Union for Muslim Scholars, to comment on the toppling of the Tunisian president. The interview is conducted by anchor Iman Ayyad in the Doha studio. Asked to address the Tunisian people, Al-Qaradawi says: “I wish to send my sincerest wishes to the fraternal people of Tunisia, who set the example for the Arab peoples and the other suppressed people and crushed masses of the entire world. We cannot say that any of the various political parties or groups got these people moving. What moved them is injustice, suppression, and hunger.” After commending “Mohammed Bouazizi, the young man who sacrificed himself,” Al-Qaradawi calls on “the Tunisian people and all Muslims to pray to God to forgive Bouazizi for committing what Islam considers the gravest sin of committing suicide.”

Tunisian Muslim Brotherhood Leader In Exile Calls For National Unity Government

The Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood website as reported on comments regarding the Tunisian crisis by Global Muslim Brotherhood leader Rashid Al-Ghannouch. According to the report:
The head of the Tunisian Islamist Al-Nahda Islamist Movement, Rashid Al-Ghannouchi described Mohamed Al-Ghannouchi coming to power as getting around the popular revolution against the regime of the Ben Ali, the dictator. He pointed out that Mohamed Al-Ghannouchi is Ben Ali’s man and will not be with the people and bring about reform. Al-Ghannouchi called on the Tunisian people to continue their strike until Ben Ali resigns, pointing out that Ben Ali is still president according to the constitution. Al-Ghannouchi stressed on the importance of having a government with national unity that includes all political powers and academics as well as having a new approach to build a strong state and bring about political and social reform.

China: US ‘Hegemony’ Comes Under Attack of Some Military Analysts Ahead of President Hu Jintao’s Visit to Washington

President Hu Jintao of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) is scheduled to pay a state visit to the United States (US) from 18 to 21 January 2011, at the invitation of his US counterpart Barack Obama. The forthcoming event involving the most important foreign relation exercise for the PRC is naturally   getting close attention of a cross section of Chinese society- leaders, officials, think tanks and media observers. So is the case with the world at large which is eager to have a glimpse into what China, the super power in making and the US, the sole remaining global super power, are expecting out of the visit.

China’s Maritime Ambitions: Implications for Regional Security

Many China analysts are aware that the interest of the Chinese in Indian Ocean is not a new phenomenon. One has to only go back to the historical voyages of Chinese Admiral Zheng He (1371-1433) who undertook seven voyages and visited 37 countries while he commanded the Chinese fleet from the middle kingdom. It is noteworthy that the fleet visited countries in Africa, Persia and the Indian Coastal Regions, thereby practicing both forward presence and flag showing. As per recorded history, these voyages pre date those of Vasco-Da-Gama and Columbus clearly illustrating the rich maritime traditions of the Chinese Sea farers centuries ago. As per the reports, it has been brought out that the vessels were large junkets of over 400 feet in length and were able to undertake long arduous ocean voyages carrying merchandise and accompanied by a supporting fleet to far corners of the world. In the light of this recorded history, it is not a surprise that there is resurgence of Chinese interest in the Indian Ocean and in maritime matters driven by a desire to protect their shipping and global interests.

MYANMAR: Post Election Developments : A Review

As per an announcement of the Union Election Commission of 18 November 2010 the regime backed Union Solidarity and Development party (USDP) won 883 of 1154 parliamentary seats, or 76.5 percent.  The National Unity Party came second with 63 seats.  The Shan Nationalities Democratic Party (SNDP) took 57 seats and the Rakhine Nationalities Development Party 35 seats.  The breakaway faction of the National League for Democracy (NLD) of Aug San Suu Ki called the National Democratic Force (NDF) could win only 16 seats as also the All Mon Regional Democracy Party which won 16 seats.  A small number of independent candidates have also won in this election. While most countries condemned the elections as far from free and fair,  ASEAN described the elections as “conducive and transparent" in the recent foreign ministers conference in Indonesia in the second week of January 2011.

Nigeria’s Presidential Candidates

After a spate of party primaries last week, Nigeria is moving into its general election. Registration has begun (accompanied by some problems), and presidential candidates are starting their campaigns in earnest. Here’s a look at some key figures:

EU needs a boost of healthy nationalism

Kiwi banker reveals his part in Mexico's drug war

A Kiwi-born banker has revealed chilling details of his undercover life working for vicious South American drug cartels, including watching a hit squad execute and dismember a group of people in front of him.
Keith Bulfin grew up in the small Otago gold-rush town of Lawrence. But years later he found himself working in Mexico City at the front end of the war on drugs. He claims he was approached by the US Drug Enforcement Agency after striking up friendships with Mexican cartel bankers while in jail for conspiring to defraud. "They moved me from a prison farm into a supermax unit and it was in that unit that I met two fugitive bankers from Mexico," he told Close Up tonight. "So I befriended them because we had a similar background and little did I know that that would actually lead to my recruitment by the Drug Enforcement Administration."

Pakistan: Destination Terror or Tolerance?

In early January the Governor of Punjab, Salman Taseer was shot dead in broad daylight in Islamabad. The assailant was a member of the Elite Force, a special police unit designed to provide security to VIPs. When questioned, Mumtaz Qadri said he murdered Taseer because he had made a statement against the blasphemy law in support of Asia Bibi, an accused Christian woman. What is even more disturbing than the act itself is the unprecedented support it has garnered across the socioeconomic spectrum, including the educated middle class: many lawyers, some journalists and even some segments of the police. Nawa-e-Waqt, the second most read Urdu-language newspaper in the country, approved and advertised the 500,000 rupee bounty that a pro-Taliban cleric put on Bibi's head just a few days before Taseer's murder.

Iran arms smuggling details to be disclosed

A key defendant in the trial, which is due to start in Abuja on January 31, is Azim Aghajani, an Iranian national who has been identified by intelligence officials as a senior officer serving in the Qods Force of Iran's Revolutionary Guards. Aghajani faces charges relating to the seizure of a cargo of weapons hidden in 13 shipping containers at the Nigerian port of Apapa, in Lagos, in October. The weapons, which included rocket-propelled grenades, machine guns and assault rifles, had been concealed in a cargo of construction materials and were discovered following a tip-off by the CIA to Nigerian security officials. Nigerian officials claim the containers were dispatched by the Qods Force of Iran's Revolutionary Guards, the unit responsible for supporting overseas Islamist militant groups.

Ex-Swiss Banker Gives Account Data To WikiLeaks

A former Swiss banker said Monday that he has handed over to WikiLeaks two discs containing what he claims is information on 2,000 offshore bank account holders. Rudolf Elmer, an ex-employee of Swiss-based bank Julius Baer, said the documents reveal case after case of tax evasion and involve 40 politicians as well as entertainers and multinationals from the U.S., the U.K. and elsewhere. He refused to name the account holders, but said the data span a period of at least 19 years and involve three banks.

Interim Tunisian Government Includes Holdovers

Stuxnet worm was U.S.-Israel project

The computer worm Stuxnet, that has set back Iran's nuclear program by several months or years, was a joint project between America and Israel, the New York Times reported. Israel tested the virus, designed to destroy Iran's nuclear centrifuges at its Natanz nuclear reactor, at its Dimona complex in the Negev Desert, according to the report published Saturday. Stuxnet reportedly has wiped out about one-fifth of Iran’s nuclear centrifuges, delaying its ability to create its first nuclear weapons.

Iran announces massive gas field discovery

The Southern part of Iran has found a new on shore gas field as informed by the Oil Minister of the country, Masoud Mirkazemi. The worth of the field is being estimates at around $50 billion. Khayyam, which is the name of the new field, posseses a 260 billion cubic meters gas and on the top of that it even has around 210 billion cubic meters of the reserve which is tagged as recoverable, as informed by Mirkazemi. "The field also holds some 220 million barrels of gas condensates, 100 million barrels of it is recoverable," Mirkazemi said yesterday. The value of the gas and gas condensates has been estimated at least $50 billion," he noted.  Mirkazemi said in the month of October that,"a new oilfield had been discovered in southern Iran, increasing the country's proven oil reserves to 150.31 billion barrels." Along with the whole thing he also made everywhere aware of the discovery of this new gas field by name Sefid (white) which has been found in Hormozgan, a southern province of Iran. "Over the course of the past six months, the country's oil and gas reserves have been reassessed. According to the latest studies, the country's oil reserves have reached 150.31 billion barrels," Mirkazemi said on November 30, 2010.

Further Venezuela Currency Devaluation Seen Soon

The January 1 devaluation was the second in 12 months and eliminated the strongest exchange rate at 2.6 bolivars per dollar of a complex, multitiered foreign exchange system. That left two official rates: 4.3 and the central bank's SITME rate of around 5.3. The most likely option is for the government to weaken the SITME rate in what some economists are saying would be a "stealth devaluation" -- as the rate has never been officially declared.

Government, Monsanto, Chemtrails and Food

The owner or the cows’ veterinarian said he suspects the cause may be IBR/BVD virus.  Authorities say there is no threat to humans or other animals.  I don’t know if I can agree given all the other mass animal deaths recently.  I guess this is another one of those “look-away-folks, nothing-to-see-here-folks, move-along-now-folks” explanations.  DHS is usually changing warning color charts and waving the fear-factor flag on news like this.  Their silence is deafening!  One suspected case of cow-something like this usually gets major air-time and every letter of the gov alphabet is on alert.  200 large animals dropped dead w/o warning it seems… they were found in a field.  If one cow was sick they would separate it from the rest.  So if it’s a virus, it appears to be fast moving… more reason to make the headlines.  The same theory for the other mass animal deaths could apply here too.

British undercover agent led attack on Irish police at rally

An undercover British agent encouraged protesters to attack Irish police officers at an EU summit in Dublin, the Guardian newspaper has reported. The undercover policeman Mark Kennedy did more than just observe and was an active participant in the proceedings, according to the newspaper. The militant anti-capitalist protestors that were at the summit, which marked the accession of eastern European states to the union, are saying that Kennedy made visits to Dublin to help train protesters and encouraged other activists to attackthe police, raising further questions about his role as an undercover officer and supports claims he acted as an agent provocateur.

Chavez: Venezuela’s Oil Reserves Top Saudi Arabia’s

Venezuela’s oil reserves total 217 billion barrels, making them the largest in the world and topping those of Saudi Arabia, President Hugo Chavez said. “We have exceeded 217 billion barrels, but the certification process has not ended,” Chavez said Saturday during a review of his 2010 accomplishments before the newly installed National Assembly. Venezuela’s total reserves could reach 300 billion barrels of crude based on new projections, and some U.S. experts estimate that they could total 500 billion barrels, with almost all the oil in the Orinoco Belt, the president said.

Wikileaks: Mafia-controlled gangster regime rules in Uzbekistan

According to a report from the U.S. Ambassador Jon Purnell, a criminal boss or one of two main thugs of Uzbekistan, Salim Abduvaliyev, sells government jobs during his working hours and entertains government officials and their wives during his leisure time, an Uzbek website Uznews reported. New revelations by the website Wikileaks refer to one of the main figures of president Islam Karimov's regime. His close links to the underworld, cover all spheres of the government and even the department of staff. In a classified report by U.S. Ambassador Jon Purnell, sent on May 5, 2006, it is stated that Salim Abduvaliyev helps businessmen to secure GOU tenders and job applicants to "buy" government jobs.

From NAFTA to CETA: Canada-EU Deep Economic Integration

Canada and the European Union (EU) have already held five rounds of negotiations towards a Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) which will go beyond NAFTA. With the sixth round of talks scheduled to take place in Brussels, Belgium from January 17-21, Canadian and EU officials remain optimistic that a deal could be finalized by the end of 2011. Thus far, negotiations have included key areas such as goods, rules of origin, services, investment, government procurement, as well as others. As talks enter their final crucial stages, there are growing concerns over the threat CETA poses to Canadian sovereignty. Coupled with the financial turmoil sweeping Europe, deep economic integration with the EU could prove disastrous.

The War You Don´t See

John Pilger has returned to a subject that can't be revived often enough: the grotesque untruth of "weapons of mass destruction": a cloudy concept, eagerly amplified and lent credibility by credulous and submissive journalists who, after 9/11, lost their nerve en masse. Pilger's contention is that on Afghanistan, on Iraq and on Israel and the Palestinian territories, the mainstream media simply take the official line. The force of his film is in its contention that the colossal scale of civilian casualties is, within the grammar of news, downgraded in importance so that it doesn't figure as news at all, but as all-but-invisible deep background to be ignored. Pilger gives due respect to WikiLeaks, although his praise for al-Jazeera's independence is ironic, given that WikiLeaks has just revealed the possibility that the Qatar government is manipulating the channel.

The Devil's Alliance: analysis of U.S-NIGERIA relations and their plots against the Muwahhidin

"At independence, Nigeria experimented with a parliamentary system of Government patterned on the British Westminster Model. Most of the policies of Nigeria as at independence were geared towards the satisfaction of British interests the most paramount of such policy was the Anglo-Defence Pact. These alliances with Britain soon became blurred especially during the Nigerian Civil War as a result of the deceptive role of Britain in the war that lasted for a period of 3 years as well as the decline in British hegemony within the International System. This decline in British power gave rise to a new form of alliance with Russia for some period which was also perceived as a Global power.

The Outlaws of the Middle East

Israeli leaders, including Prime Minister Benyamin Netanyahu, have been complaining about the increasing “de-legitimization” of the Zionist state across the world. Netanyahu, who is a skilled media operator, said that Israel “needs to de-legitimize the de-legitimizers”.
However, a fleeting glance at recent Israeli actions shows that Israel is a nefarious, lawless and murderous entity whose representatives commit murder and terrorism knowingly and deliberately against innocent people. In doing so, it is they who “de-legitimize” the state of Israel. Murder, even when “mistaken”, is Israel’s modus operandi when dealing with its real or imaginary foes, whoever and wherever they happen to be. Some of the murder victims are apolitical figures, innocent people whose killing has no possible justification other than the “need” to make the other party suffer psychologically.

Hezbollah Secretary General Sayyed Hasan Nasrallah delivers a speech on Al-Manar TV

Hezbollah Secretary General Sayyed Hasan Nasrallah delivers a speech on Al-Manar TV to tackle the recent developments in Lebanon and draw a picture of the course of events “because it is the right of all the Lebanese to know and because facts can always uncover the schemes being prepared for our country.”
His eminence said that Hezbollah had always supported the Saudi Syrian effort to defuse the crisis in Lebanon in light of the imminent release of the indictment against Hezbollah members by the Special Tribunal for Lebanon. “In fact we bargained on this effort as all the Lebanese who sought welfare for Lebanon,” he said.

Oil Limits Overview

We live in a world that is finite. While there are huge amounts of oil, gas, coal, and minerals (such as uranium, gold, silver, copper, and lithium), we tend to extract the easiest to obtain, highest quality resources first. Eventually, we find it is more and more expensive to extract additional quantities of these items. Aquifers that are slow to replenish become more and more depleted. Top soil tends to erode faster than it is replaced. Pollution tends to be a problem too, with the most obvious example being carbon dioxide added to air and water.

Inter-Korea Dialogue versus Japan-South Korea Military Engagement

For the Korean peninsula, the year 2011 opened with hopes of a return to peace, with North Korea making a series of gestures to South Korea to “open their hearts” and resume talks after a hiatus marked by hostility. The North’s offer coincided with the 28th birthday of the heir apparent Kim Jong-UN. North Korea’s Committee for the Peaceful Reunification of Korea said, “We do not want to see the present South Korean authorities pass the five-year term of their office idly without North-South dialogue.” It further said that “there is neither conditionality in the North’s proposal for dialogue nor need to cast any doubt about its real intention.” Further, Pyongyang pledged to reconnect the hotline between the Red Cross organisations of both Koreas and reopen the Consultative Office for North-South Economic Cooperation at the Kaesong industrial complex to take the lead in pushing for inter-Korean talks.

CRUDE: The Real Price of Oil

The story of lawsuit by tens of thousands of Ecuadorans against Chevron over contamination of the Ecuadorean Amazon. One of the largest and most controversial legal cases on the planet. An inside look at the infamous $27 billion Amazon Chernobyl case, CRUDE is a real-life high stakes legal drama set against a backdrop of the environmental movement, global politics, celebrity activism, human rights advocacy, the media, multinational corporate power, and rapidly-disappearing indigenous cultures.

Preparing for War with Russia? Washington To Rearm Georgia For New Conflicts

Recent reports in the Russian news media have detailed plans by the U.S. to provide the Mikheil Saakashvili government in Georgia with tens of millions of dollars worth of anti-aircraft and anti-tank weapons. The Russian government's Itar-Tass news agency and Voice of Russia have confirmed the arms package with officials from the Russian special services and the Joint Staff of the armed forces. An official from the second source responded to the proposed arms sale by stating: "We deeply regret that the reset of US-Russian relations declared by the administration of Barack Obama does not change anything in Washington's military support for the Georgian leadership, which began the war in the Caucasus in August 2008 and which is continuing to mastermind aggressive plans against the independent states of Abkhazia and South Ossetia." [1]

The US-Israeli coup in Beirut

The United States and Israel have executed a stealth coup that has precipitated the collapse of Lebanon's unity government. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton preemptively torpedoed negotiations between Saudi Arabia and Syria by telling "Saudi King Abdullah and Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri that the U.S. would reject any settlement at the expense of the UN tribunal." (Tehran Times) Clinton knew that the Saudi-Syria team was close to a "breakthrough" that would have resolved contentious issues related to the investigation of the assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri. She could not allow that to happen because it would derail the US/Israeli plan for regime change and another Israeli invasion of Lebanon.

The Balkanization of Sudan: The Redrawing of the Middle East and North Africa

Sudan is a diverse nation and a country that represents the plurality of Africa through various tribes, clans, ethnicities, and religious groups. Yet the unity of Sudan is in question, while there is talk of unifying nations and of one day creating a United States of Africa through the African Union. The limelight is on the January 2011 referendum in South Sudan. The Obama Administration has formally announced that it supports the separation of South Sudan from the rest of Sudan. The balkanization of Sudan is what is really at stake. For years the leaders and officials of South Sudan have been supported by America and the European Union. The Politically-Motivated Demonization of Sudan
A major demonization campaign has been underway against Sudan and its government. True, the Sudanese government in Khartoum has had a bad track record in regards to human rights and state corruption, and nothing could justify this.

In regards to Sudan, selective or targeted condemnation has been at work. One should, nonetheless, ask why the Sudanese leadership has been targeted by the U.S. and E.U., while the human rights records of several U.S. sponsored client states including Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the U.A.E., and Ethiopia are casually ignored.

The Logic of Imperial Insanity and the Road to World War III

Defining the Imperial Stratagem

In the late 1990s Brzezinski wrote up the design for America’s imperial project in the 21st century in his book, “The Grand Chessboard.” He stated bluntly that, “it is imperative that no Eurasian challenger emerges, capable of dominating Eurasia and thus of also challenging America,” and then made clear the imperial nature of his strategy:

To put it in a terminology that harkens back to the more brutal age of ancient empires, the three grand imperatives of imperial geostrategy are to prevent collusion and maintain security dependence among the vassals, to keep tributaries pliant and protected, and to keep the barbarians from coming together.

Troubles continue in Tunisia; Islamists enter the game

The departure of the Tunisian President didn’t calm the street. Hours after President Zine el-Abidine Ben Ali fled the country and Prime minister Mohamed Ghannouchi announced he is “temporarily in charge”, the situation appears to be out of control in Tunisia.

Multiple, cases of looting are signalled in the capital where inhabitants organize militias to protect themselves and their properties. Helicopters were seen patrolling on the city. It is said that properties belonging to family members and friends of President Ben Ali were attacked, looted and destroyed. As the security situation is considerably degrading in Tunis, it appears to be worst in other cities: troops and security services are converging and focusing on the capital where the government must quickly re-establish order and safety

Macedonia To Widen Hunt for Former Spies

The ruling centre-right VMRO DPMNE party and its junior partner, the Democratic Union for Integration, DUI, are proposing to widen the span of the lustration process to include journalists, political leaders, clerics, lawyers and NGO activists along with former public office-holders. Unlike the situation with the current lustration law, which probes only into current high-ranking holders of public office, former presidents and prime ministers will now also have to file statements that they were not police collaborators in the past.
“The goal of the amendment to include more segments of society is to have a [more] just process,” Silvana Boneva, a legislator from VMRO DPMNE, told Balkan Insight.

Rosneft and BP Form Global and Arctic Strategic Alliance

BP and Rosneft announced that they have agreed a groundbreaking strategic global alliance. Rosneft and BP have agreed to explore and develop three license blocks – EPNZ 1,2,3 – on the Russian Arctic continental shelf. These licences were awarded to Rosneft in 2010 and cover approximately 125,000 square kilometres in a highly prospective area of the South Kara Sea. This is an area roughly equivalent in size and prospectivity to the UK North Sea. This historic agreement creates the first major equity-linked partnership between a national and international oil company. Following completion of this agreement, Rosneft will hold 5 per cent of BP’s ordinary voting shares in exchange for approximately 9.5 per cent of Rosneft’s shares. The share swap component of the alliance creates strategic alignment to pursue joint projects and demonstrates mutual confidence in the growth potential of both companies.

Weimar Stresses Restructuring Of European Defense

The Weimar group of Poland, France and Germany is pushing for action to restructure Europe's Defence Technological and Industrial Base (EDTIB) and wants concrete results in a range of areas under the Polish presidency of the EU in the second half of 2011. In a December letter delivered to the Catherine Ashton, EU's High Representative for Foreign and Security Policy and head of the European Defence Agency, the foreign affairs and defense ministers of the three countries say that "restructuring European DTIB remains a strategic and economic necessity, together with stimulating research investments." They add that "particularly in this field, we see a potentially substantial role for the EDA as well, under your leadership" and ask her to provide a report on progress in this field "in due time."

Wikileaks Gives $15,100 to Manning Defense

On Monday, WikiLeaks fulfilled its pledge to contribute toward the legal defense of accused whistleblower Bradley Manning by transferring $15,100 to the legal trust account of Manning's attorney. WikiLeaks publicly solicited donations specifically for the expenses of Manning's legal defense following his arrest in May 2010. In light of WikiLeaks' current fiscal challenges -- due in large part to the shameful actions of Visa, MasterCard and PayPal in cutting off services to WikiLeaks at the behest of the US government -- the Bradley Manning Support Network commends WikiLeaks for their contribution at this time. "This donation from WikiLeaks is vital to our efforts to ensure Bradley receives a fair, open trial," says founder and steering committee member Mike Gogulski.

Swiss banker who helped WikiLeaks faces trial

A: Will Wikileaks help raise funds for their most notable source and fame-generator before Manning?

Indeed, and who else is in line for indictment besides the banker and Manning? According to another report the banker indictment is based on violation of Swiss bank secrecy laws, and is allegedly unrelated to the leak to Wikileaks. Hmm, that smells of disinformation about where the probe will go and what Wikileaks will do when drawn into it.

Extradition imminent for ELN ringleader 'Tulio'

Venezuela has begun the process has of extraditing captured Colombian Nilson Teran Ferreira, alias "Tulio" who was allegedly the second-in-command of the North Front of the ELN. Tulio is to be handed over to Colombian authorities following his capture in Venezuela last december. A special team of the Colombian Judicial Police will escort the ringleader on a private airplane, after Hugo Chavez announced his intention to cooperate with the Colombian government over issues of security. The action was has been described by President Juan Manuel Santos as a signal of the increasing collaboration between the two countries. The guerrilla is expected to arrive in Colombia after midday Friday, reports WRadio.

Alleged ETA member charged for training FARC

Prosecutors Friday charged an alleged member of the Basque separatist group ETA of training members of the Colombian guerrilla group FARC in computer science, reported newspaper El Tiempo Friday. Iraitz Guesalag was arrested in France Tuesday and will be extradited to Spain for his role with the ETA and for collaborating with the terrorist organization FARC in while in Venezuela.

Neo-paramilitaries demobilize in north Colombia

Colombia news - Demobilized

Eleven suspected members of the neo-paramilitary "Urabeños" gang on Friday surrendered to authorities in the north Colombian department of Cordoba. The alleged gang members surrendered themselves to members of the army's 11th Brigade, who are taking part in an offensive against neo-paramilitary and drug gangs in the region. The offensive follows the death of two students of the prestigious De Los Andes University in Bogota, who were found murdered on Tuesday near a beach in the north of Cordoba where they were on Holiday.

FARC use Illegal mining to finance war

Colombia's largest rebel group FARC have taken up the illegal mining of gold to finance their armed conflict with the state, President Juan Manuel Santos said Saturday. According to the President, emails found on the computers of slain FARC commander "Mono Jojoy" prove that the guerrillas turned to illegal mining to make up for the losses of income generated with drug trafficking, which, according to Santos, received serious blows over the past few years.

N.Korea spy jailed for assassination bid in S.Korea

A South Korean court has jailed a North Korean spy for 10 years for plotting to assassinate the highest-ranking defector ever to flee the communist state. The Seoul Central District Court said the 46-year-old would-be assassin, identified only as Lee, intended to murder Hwang Jang-Yop on orders from a North Korean espionage body. Lee had admitted the charge, saying he had been trained by the North's Reconnaissance Bureau, which oversees espionage operations against the South.

Energy and Environment in the Barack Obama–Hu Jintao Meeting

A number of events during President Hu Jintao’s visit to the United States will underscore that the energy dialogue between the United States and China continues to be a key area of engagement, where both sides can point to recent successes, but it is not without threat of derailment. Both the United and China face the daunting task of transforming their energy systems to deal with the economic, security, and environmental risks of continued primary reliance on fossil fuels. At their upcoming summit, Presidents Obama and Hu have an opportunity to reiterate and reinforce their commitment to address these global issues of energy security and climate change. Because the United States and China represent nearly 40 percent of total world energy consumption and are the world’s major producers of carbon emissions, this shared commitment is critical in the global effort to provide a cleaner and more secure energy future. Without meaningful efforts by these two countries, the global effort will fail.

Chinese Yuan; A new world reserve currency?

Only a mere twelve days into the New Year (2011) and China have already set the wheels in motion to use their most powerful weapon, the Yuan, in order to combat inflation. This may well be the first decision of many that will result in the Yuan being phased in as the new world reserve currency. A stronger exchange rate will be the tool that China use in order to tame their inflationary problems at present. The biggest increases being felt as a result of inflation at this time are; the Chinese housing market, which was most dramatically affected in the southern industrial hub of Guangzhou, where home prices soared by 38 percent in the past year. Another sector heavily affected was Chinese groceries, with the cost of some foods increasing by 50 percent.

Achieving Victory With Tawheed

Announcing the Launch of Al-Qadisiyyah Media

All praises and thanks be to Allah, Who (Alone) originated the darkness and the light, yet those who disbelieve hold others as equal with their Lord. May peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah, Muhammad ibn Abdullah, and upon all his family, companions and those who followed him. To proceed:
The struggle between truth and falsehood between the army of Allah and the army of Taghut has been in existence since the beginning of creation, and will last till the Final Hour. Today as well, we see this struggle, in which the Cross-worshippers have mustered all they can to fight the truth. One of the greatest means they have mustered is the media, a means which has become of of the most important weapons in modern warfare. It would not be an exaggeration to say that in every war which has taken place in our present times, the military campaign has been preceded by a media campaign to gain the favor of the masses.
