Taiwan was closely monitoring the whereabouts of China’s military
aircraft and vessels deployed near Taiwanese waters during last week’s
computerized war games, the Ministry of National Defense (MND) said
yesterday.
There were no military information leaks during the
five-day computer-aided Han Kuang drills, the MND said in a released
statement yesterday to refute a Chinese-language report that said
Chinese Navy vessels were collecting confidential data on the drills.
The
Apple Daily quoted military sources as saying that the Chinese Navy
sent military vessels to waters at both Northern and Southern Taiwan to
intercept communications during the Han Kuang computerized war games
held last Monday through Friday.
The report alleges that acts of
espionage were undetected by the Taiwanese military until several
high-ranking military officials warned the MND to be on high alert over
these Chinese vessels near Taiwanese waters.
In response, the MND
yesterday called the report “fictitious and ungrounded.” The military
closely monitored every move of Chinese forces during the five-day drill
and were ready to take responsive measures in case of a possible
security threat.
The computerized war games were held in a closed
network system and therefore the Chinese forces had no access to
information on the drills, the ministry added.
The just concluded
five-day computer-aided war games were the second part of the Han Kuang
series of exercises to test the country’s defense capabilities amid the
growing military threat from China.
The computerized drills tested
Taiwan’s information and electronic warfare capabilities, combat
readiness of attack helicopters and anti-submarine aircraft, as well as
other offensive and defensive tactics.
The Han Kuang exercises are Taiwan’s most important war games involving the country’s Army, Air Force and Navy.
